My Grandmother's Sweater

CRITICISM:

The poem my grandmother’s sweater is a free-verse type of poetry. The structure of the poem is not balanced, wherein, the pauses, punctuations and the length of the verses in each stanza is different from the other stanzas. There are lines which are short, and there are also lines which are quite long. The author of the poem utilized the punctuations effectively in such a way the meaning or the message implied in the poem can be easily understood. So as the pauses, the author is very clear about the thought being implied, because the usage of the pauses is very effective. You mat not grasp the meaning by reading it once; you must read it for several times in order to understand it.

The poem is descriptive. The author described the series of events using inanimate characters to make the story behind the poem clear. Inside the poem, the events seemed to let the readers think of what is so uncertain. It implies the idea that what you have may only last for a moment. The theme of the poem is tragedy, because as I understood it, the “Grandmother” in the poem died. The mood of the poem is sad. It is very evident in some lines which are really expressed with a lot of emotions – love, pain, insanity, and fear.

The meaning of the poem lies beneath. The reader can’t grasp the meaning by reading it once. You need to re-read it, because the meaning is deep and is hard to understand. The author made use of different figures of speech such as personification – when the author relates the morning with the sleeping robins. Another is irony—when the author pointed out which way does the grass grows and answered down into the ground.

As a whole, the style of the poem is very unusual, because it is a free-verse. The number of syllables in each line is not equal. There is a good flow inside the poem, the sequence of events are clear. The only thing is that the meaning or the message behind the poem is vague. Readers may not get the meaning by reading it once. Thos poem calls for a deep comprehension and understanding in order to get the massage of the author.
