DESIRE by Paz Latorena

CRITICISM

Desire is a short story written by Paz Latorena. The author’s intention as I perceived it is to inform the readers about the bitter truth in life—you just can’t have it all. In life, there are things which are beyond our control, and there are people who always look at you and judge you according to what they see. Most of the time, people commit mistakes because of this notion. The author wants to address the message to everyone, especially to those people who make criticism which are generated from objective criticism. We are deceived by what our eyes see. The author stressed the idea of this short story in manner that readers would probably think and assess themselves if ever they are similar to the people being exemplified in the story.

The ending of the story is related to the beginning, and to all other events in the story. It has the same idea with that of the beginning. The ending of the story did not resolve the problem because the result is similar to the beginning. The author justified why there is a need to stress this idea. The girl in the story may have covered his perfect yet hated figure, but the moment she uncovered that, she was still judged for what is evident to her. Just like the other men, it is only her perfect figure being admired, her face as repeatedly told, was disregarded. The men in the story are vey prejudiced.
